What is Vitamin D?

Technically not a "vitamin," vitamin D is in a class by itself. Its metabolic product, calcitrol , is actually a secosteroid hormone that is the key that unlocks binding sites on the human genome . The human genome contains more than 2,700 binding sites for calcitriol; those binding sites are near genes involved in virtually every known major disease of humans.

Research has shown that vitamin D deficiency is an problem among American adults today, suggesting that up to 90% of North Americans are vitamin D deficient. This epidemic is most likely caused by over-usage of sunscreen in climates and during seasons when sunburn is not a possibility.*
